A BRIEF HISTORY OF BULLION GOLDWORKING: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Bullion is a shiny metallic thread made from very fine wires wound into a tubular shape which was originally developed in Asia and has been used for over 2000 years. Goldworking is the process of stitching the bullion threading together.

Bullion Goldworking has always been reserved for occasional and special use only, due to both the expense of the materials, the time to create the embroidery, and because the threads, no matter how expertly applied, will not hold up to frequent laundering of any kind.

THE DEMISE OF AN AGE-OLD PROCESS

These factors, along with the advent of modern large format digital embroidery machines, have caused a massive decline in the use of Bullion Goldworking. It's not practiced in the United States and is now most commonly used for one-off designs or the highest-quality church vestments, military uniform insignia, and Asian wedding garments.

There are only a handful of sources left in the world that can produce it properly and correctly, and even less that can maintain the quality standards necessary to satisfy the sophisticated consumer.
